The Unstoppables: Tapping Your Entrepreneurial Power

Audible has scheduled the release of my latest audiobook for July 5, 2013.  The Unstoppables:  Tapping Your Entrepreneurial Power is based on foreword author Graham Weston's experience growing Rackspace, as well as fascinating case studies from such organizations as the Navy SEALs and Israeli Special Forces. In The UnStoppables Bill Schley, co-founder of the branding firm Brand Team Six shows how the best practitioners think continuously about two things: The Big Picture and the Little Picture--essence and essentials. The essentials are the business and financial mechanics required of any working enterprise. But the essence is the emotional mechanics to deal with obstacles, risk, fear and failure. Mastering the emotional mechanics is how entrepreneurs succeed and winners win. This is how you capture the unlimited power of entrepreneurship to spark a successful start-up or revitalize a mature organization.

  • Explains why what's stopping you is more important than what's starting you, how to tap the essence of entrepreneurial power in you and in your organization, and how motion generates vision
  • Bill Schley is an award winning author and established expert on branding and marketing communications, as well as the co-founder and creative director of the branding firm Brand Team Six
  • Graham Weston is the internationally renowned co-founder and chairman of Rackspace, the world's #1 cloud computing and managed hosting company

This book teaches you how to become an entrepreneur or to inspire an entrepreneurial mindset to boost any stage business. This book is about how this nation can launch thousands more entrepreneurs for the future.

A sample from the book's foreword is provided here.  The book will be available at Audible, Amazon and iTunes on or shortly following the release date.

Making War At Fort Hood

Audible has just released my latest narration project, Making War At Fort Hood: Life and Uncertainty in a Military Community, written by Kenneth T. MacLeish.  The book offers an illuminating look at war through the daily lives of the people whose job it is to produce it. Kenneth MacLeish conducted a year of intensive fieldwork among soldiers and their families at and around the US Army's Fort Hood in central Texas. He shows how war's reach extends far beyond the battlefield into military communities where violence is as routine, boring, and normal as it is shocking and traumatic.

Fort Hood is one of the largest military installations in the world, and many of the 55,000 personnel based there have served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. MacLeish provides intimate portraits of Fort Hood's soldiers and those closest to them, drawing on numerous in-depth interviews and diverse ethnographic material. He explores the exceptional position that soldiers occupy in relation to violence--not only trained to fight and kill, but placed deliberately in harm's way and offered up to die. The death and destruction of war happen to soldiers on purpose. MacLeish interweaves gripping narrative with critical theory and anthropological analysis to vividly describe this unique condition of vulnerability. Along the way, he sheds new light on the dynamics of military family life, stereotypes of veterans, what it means for civilians to say "thank you" to soldiers, and other questions about the sometimes ordinary, sometimes agonizing labor of making war.

Making War at Fort Hood is the first ethnography to examine the everyday lives of the soldiers, families, and communities who personally bear the burden of America's most recent wars.  The book was published by Princeton University Press in 2013.  Production copyright for the audiobook, is Audible, Inc., 2013.

Adam's Gift Released

I recently completed narrating a fascinating story of courage in the face of threats to career from creed and community.  Jimmy Creech's memoir, entitled Adam's Gift: A Pastor's Calling to Defy the Church's Persecution of Lesbians and Gays, describes the outrage that results when Pastor Creech prays God's blessing on the holy union of two lesbians.  The key events, which took place in the late 1990's, in my hometown, were among the earliest rays of light in the dawn of the public’s recognition of the discrimination that exists toward those in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.  The growing acceptance of the need for fair treatment of lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender people, as evidenced in the evolution of the thinking of President Obama, the acceptance of gay marriage in nine states and the District of Columbia, the reconsideration of the discriminatory policies of the Boy Scouts of America, and the U. S. Supreme Court’s consideration of the constitutionality of “defense of marriage” laws, in the current term, all owe a debt of gratitude to Jimmy Creech, who was among the first to challenge our collective consciousness to these injustices.

Duke University Press originally published this book in 2011.  The audiobook, released by University Press Audiobooks in 2013, is available through Audible, Amazon and iTunes.   An excerpt from the first chapter is available here:
